Kodak HD Playtouch Summary Review
Kodak’s take on trendy pocket camcorder, the Playtouch, have glaring flaws like mediocre video quality but offers great features including an external mic input. Kodak HD Playtouch Review
The Good:
HDMI cable
Responsive touch controls
HD Video Quailty
Web Ready
The Bad:
Limited display size for shooting
Cheap, plastic-y built (you get what you pay for)
The Playtouch is Kodak’s answer to the increasingly popular compact camcorder trend. This handy cam is available in various colors, teal, black, chrome and orange. Unfortunately, the Playtouch only comes in one flavor, a model featuring 128 MB internal memory and a SD/HD card slot with expandable memory of up to 32 GB.
The Playtouch’s 3.0-inch display takes up most space on the back of the camcorder, crammed together with the speaker, record button and a battery indicator underneath. One of the major flaws of this device is the poor video quality. We all know how Kodak sets a high standard when it comes to video quality and it’s quite puzzling how the Playtouch ever made the cut.
The overall built of the device is light and compact, making it easy to bring just about anywhere. The Playtouch is made to move with video bloggers and makes a great camcorder during emergencies. However, the overall built does look and feel cheap and plastic-y. The thin plastic shell makes it prone to damages and is clearly not made for heavy usage.
Just like any pocket camcorder of its kind, the Playtouch offers simplified video shooting. It’s a no brainer, just press record and off you go. The video resolution is set to 720/30p with 1080p, max. The downside is, there is only one setting for stills, which is five megapixels.
Performance-wise, the Playtouch hardly has anything new to offer, making it just another pocket camcorder available, in the ranks of the more popular Flip and Sony’s The Bloggie. The video and still quality are almost the same as any pocket camcorder in the market. The Playtouch wins in providing an alternative to other types of pocket camcorders and in providing vibrant video shooting and stills with its crystal clear image, especially for high-def videos.
